Dear Mum
We met on a cold December morning, but all I remember feeling was warmth and light. As you held me gently in your tired arms – reeling from the fresh cuts and wounds of a fierce warrior - our eyes met for the first time.
It was instantly love at first sight.
You brought me into this world. You made me from scratch. You embraced every ounce of me unequivocally and wholeheartedly. A love only a mother knows.
Life has changed as you knew it. And as I looked up at those beautiful brown eyes – filled with joy, wonder and excitement – I knew we were destined for one another.
It’s true that life never goes as planned. And at six, I knew life was about to change again as we knew it. A storm was about to hit – one that we would never recover from.
Everything ended as quickly as it had started. We were standing in the aftermath of what used to be.
A once happy home.
That was the day our family became a little bit smaller. You held me gently in your tired arms and as I once again looked up at those beautiful brown eyes, they reassured me that everything was going to be just fine.
You reached for my small hand and together, we walked out the front door. I didn’t look back because I knew there was no place I’d rather be…
Than right there next to my mum.
In the blink of an eye, a girl became a woman.
One who was raised by a strong mother and brought up to be equally fearless, ambitious and independent.
In all of life’s milestones, I scan through the sea of faces for those beautiful brown eyes. The ones that have been there at every recital, tournament, braces appointment, parent teacher conference, birthday and graduation.
For absolutely everything.
I’ve always smiled proudly when told “you look just like your mum”. Everything I am is a product of your unwavering love and support. Everything I’ve achieved is a testament to the countless sacrifices you did not hesitate to make.
No one is perfect, but you are more than I could ever ask for.
And in return, I shine for you.
After every fight and disagreement, you’ve always said –
“Everything I do is for you. You’ll understand when you become a mom one day”.
And I think to myself -
Hopefully, I’ll be half as wonderful as you.
Happy Mother’s Day.
Love forever and always,
Rachel
